block party

After living in several different locations throughout my life, I finally went to my first block party.  Funny thing, we seemed to be the unofficial hosts.  Above: what better time to break out the new skillet and a batch of paella?
Our neighbors' baby had the cutest ice cream goatee but dodged and weaved out of my picture.
It was a great turn out considering it was the first block party in years.  What made it special was when the oldest neighbors on the street came.  Some have lived on the street since 1956.
Many stories were exchanged.  Most neighbors knew the neighboring family closest to them but not those down the street.  This gave everyone the opportunity to become familiar.

By the end of the night neighbors were planning for the next fall event: Halloween.
Mission accomplished.

After years of family gatherings and reunions, this felt completely natural and yet it wasn't like hearding cats this time; our neighbors really wanted to get together. After a Halloween gathering for beggars night, they are now talking about taking a Saturday after Thanksgiving and helping decorate holiday lights @ for anyone who wants help, as well as a Spring breakfast and egg hunt (anything to block off the street again).

We may have created a monster. And yet, it seems like it should be.

One of my friends near Kenwood had block party for years at Memorial Day and Labor Day. Kind of faded when the kids grew up and some folks divorced or moved. But it was a big deal.

I been in my home 20+ years and went to my first neighbor party 2 years ago. Good to get to know a few more folks on the street. It was only about 10 homes but the friendships I formed then are still good.

good job!
